Abstract:
Combininga comprehensive household survey and an industrial firm survey, we investigatethe impacts of import tariff reduction after China’s entry into WTO on urbanincome growth and distribution. Our identification strategy exploits thevariation in the degree of tariff reduction across industries and the variationin the pre-WTO industry composition of local employment across Chinese cities.We find that those cities with larger tariff reduction after WTO entryexperienced lower income growth for manufacturing workers. Our estimationresults suggest that such impacts occurred mainly through wage income andproperty income. We also find that tariff reduction reduced income inequalityat the city level. These results shed lights on the adjustment costs of tradeliberalization in the developing countries.
